I CANNOT FIND THIS BLOG, HELP

So a while ago I read this blog post (possibly an article) about women denying things like cake and how cake is a celebration and you don’t eat cake every day, and it ended on a note of “eat the damn cake.” And I cannot for the life of me find it anywhere. Help?

So I just saw that my college offers a class called "Obesity Prevention Strategies" *sigh* Why not offer a class called "Body Shaming Techniques" instead. Ugh.

Sounds like your college needs a mandatory “Asshole Prevention Strategies” class tbh

Marilyn Wann discovered this ad in her hometown and shared it on her Facebook page after posting a letter next to it, complete with an open list for signatures, that states:

This ad promotes negative stereotypes and prejudice about weight, race [and] class. Children deserve respect [and] joy. That’s what we think.”

(The physical list has since been taken down/removed by an unknown source.)

Some of her followers (notably Lynn Novak) also discovered that the ad included a heavily photoshopped photo that included darkening the little girl’s skin and fattening her appearance, replacing the milk in her hand with a packet of juice.

You can also see the original image on their homepage:

Now, I work in the advertising world. I sit in a gaggle of creative people who are directed to do things like this by clients, or who may genuinely feel there is nothing wrong with the harmful perpetuation of stereotypes this sort of work represents.

But I know better.

Labeling foods as “healthy” and “unhealthy” is inaccurate, especially when these messages of ill-health are being directed correlated with images of fat bodies, feeding into the kind of hysteria and fear of obesity that breeds hate and body shaming.

The bottom line is that different foods, drinks, and sugars effect different bodies in different ways.

If corporations and government organizations want to have a discussion about health and sugary drinks, that’s one thing - but there is no doubt that these messages can be expressed without pulling fat bodies into the equation, or feeding into harmful stereotypes about fatness and health.

There is so much more to be said about this ad regarding implications about diabetes, class, and race - But I will save that for those who may be better equipped to add to the conversation.

It is no coincidence that government agencies (and diet companies) are now targeting communities of color with “obesity prevention” campaigns. The photo/ad above is only one example, but what you see are agencies going into these communities and instead of trying to solve systemic racism or poverty, which has a far larger impact on health than body size, they are only pushing to eradicate fat people.

This is aside from the photoshopping of the original image to create a child that not only looks older, darker and cartoonish is incredibly dehumanizing, fat phobic, and racist.

And if obesity was such a fucking “epidemic,” WHY THE FUCK COULDN’T THEY FIND AN ACTUAL FAT KID TO USE FOR THEIR PROPAGANDA INSTEAD OF PHOTOSHOPPING EXTRA FAT ONTO A THINNER CHILD?

Hospital rebrands chemotherapy as DC-themed “superformula” for kids

Chemotherapy is never fun, but A.C.Camargo Cancer Center in São Paulo is trying to make it easier for children to accept the treatment. They’re rebranding the treatment as “superformula” and using comics to help kids understand chemo.

Buzzfeed’s Copyranter blog explains that the cancer center is working with ad agency JWT, which also works with Warner Bros. The idea was to help children believe in the power of chemotherapy to make them ultimately better. They’re not just covering the chemo cases with superhero logos; they’re also giving pediatric cancer patients comic books in which the heroes experience something similar to cancer and must receive a similar treatment formulated by doctors. And in the comics, the cases for the treatment bags look just like the cases the kids get over their own chemo bags.

A great idea. Great job to those who thought of this.

This is amazing, y’all.

One of two fake abortion clinics on the same street as the REAL center, the EMW’s Women Center here in downtown Louisville. This one is right next door to the actual clinic and this place is seriously a nightmarish hell-hole for any unsuspecting women tricked by the anti’s. They assure you this this the abortion clinic, they get you inside, and then offer you food and drink—which of course, means that once you realize your mistake, you can’t run next door and catch your actual appointment, since you need to fast.
Women have come out of this building crying, and on a few rare occasions, without their pants. They take you to a back room for an ultrasound, have you remove your pants, and then begin lecturing you on the sins of aborting. They do not give you back your pants until you have listened, and a few women tricked this far refused to listen and stormed out furious, ashamed, and in their underwear.
This is the anti-choice agenda—lying, tricking, shaming, and embarrassing women to the brink of hysterics in hopes that she carry the pregnancy to term. Forcing her, through lies and manipulation, to do with her body what THEY want, not what is best for her.
There is no “choice” at the Louisville “Women’s Choice” clinics. Just abuse, shame, and bigots who would rather undress a woman to make her feel vulnerable and then explain how awful of a person she is than let her make HER. CHOICE.

I saw this and thought that can not be true

‘Cause people seem to only post the 20-something Audrey Hepburn

this is genuinely the first photo i’ve seen of her looking older

I didn’t know Audrey Hepburn grew old into a bomb-ass old lady until like, last year. I thought she died young cuz that’s the only pictures I’ve ever seen.

omg

<3

she was also the granddaughter of a baron, the daughter of a nazi sympathizer, spent her teens doing ballet to secretly raise money for the dutch resistance against the nazis, and spent her post-film career as a goodwill ambassador of UNICEF, winning the presidential medal of freedom for her efforts.
and history remembers her as pretty.

THATS WHY IT FUCKING BOTHERS ME WHEN PEOPLE ””ADORE””’AUDREY HEPBURN OR MARILYN MONROE WITHOUT KNOWING THEIR FILM WORK LET ALONE THEIR PERSONAL LIVES.
These women were insanely beautiful, yes. But they were also amazing actresses and led amazing lives.
IF SOMEONE IS YOUR ‘IDOL’ DO YOUR GODDAMN RESEARCH. DON’T LET YOURSELF TAKE PART IN THE ERASURE OF BEAUTIFUL WOMEN’S PART IN HISTORY JUST BECAUSE MEN THINK THEY ARE PRETTY.

I love this.

I have to go to the gym at least three times a week usually four. I have to shave my legs, pluck my eyebrows, paint my nails and wear make up. I'm too scared that if i don't no one will want me. I don't want to be alone.

You will not be alone. I promise.

Do what makes you happy. Shave, or don’t shave; pluck, or don’t pluck; wear make-up or go naked. The people who deserve to be in your life will love you for doing the things that make you happy. They will love you for so many more and more important reasons than whether or not you shave your legs. You will not be alone. I promise.

On fat and femininity, part one.

I’ll be honest: this is the most personal thing I’ve ever written. I am a little, teeny, eensy bit worried about it.

But lately I’ve been thinking about these things that I’ve done and that have happened to me and thinking about them specifically in terms of an ulcer I haven’t tried to heal yet. I’ve wondered how many people will read this and think, “Ah.” I don’t think I’m alone.

So I’m going to share this story, knowing from past experience that sharing stories builds strength, and hope it’s still true.

See, when I was younger I wanted to be invisible.
