[TRIGGER WARNING: Rape culture]
In my experience, most of the issues Men’s Rights Activists complain about are rooted in sexism against women, therefore contributing to damaging gender roles all around; it is not, however, institutional sexism against men. Such a thing does not exist.
Repeat: does not exist.
Frankly, the most exhausting thing to me about MRAs is not that they never have any good points (usually, they do) but instead that they are rabidly convinced those points are rooted in some kind of structural, institutional oppression of men and are incapable of seeing the intersectionality of race, class, and how misogyny comes into play against men (like when, in heterosexual couples, mothers are automatically assumed to be the better parent — that’s misogyny). Yes, men are more likely to go to jail! Specifically men of color who are also poor. Yes, there is a WILD underreporting of sexual assault against men… due to the social gender construction that men are always, always up for sex, which came about at least in part because women’s purity was SO IMPORTANT (because we are historically just property of men, hooray) that they were told they must defend, defend, defend against the evil raging testosterone beasts of men (by the way, to suggest that women rape as many men as men rape women so how dare feminists be mad at men for rape is disgusting and WRONG and you deserve a smack upside the head).
And basically, if you ever say something as asinine as “false wage gap,” or “female privilege,” you are giving up any right to be taken seriously by anyone.
Allegedly, MRAs that are capable of recognizing intersectionality and not being complete assholes exist. I have yet to meet any, but I also actively avoid them, so my sample size is not large (until I wrote an open letter to men who cry “misandry” and it got much, much larger, but still with the same kind of MRA). I’m sure they exist! And I’m sure I haven’t met any because they’re probably not the kind of people who would come into my inbox to mansplain to me how sexism works. White, cisgender, heterosexual men (which seem to me to comprise the majority of the MRAs that are vocally against things like, you know, feminism) are not oppressed simply by virtue of any of those identities. Minority oppression hurts a lot of people, sometimes privileged parties. But you’re not being hurt because your privileged. You’re being hurt because the ways in which your privilege acts on other people results in some backlash.
And if you’re an MRA who’s against feminism or who starts spitting misogynistic slurs the second someone calls out rape culture, or sexism, or whatever, you’re doing equality wrong.
